Report: ESC Snapshot (April 2016)

Highlights from the April 2016 report:

  • 2,698,857 certificates were submitted for 2015 surrender by liable parties by April end.   Origin Energy and EnergyAustralia surrendered the bulk of these certificates, 859k and 648k respectively, representing a 55 per cent share of the market (down 5 per cent on the previous year).
  • 296,533 certificates were created in April which was 11 per cent above the 12-month average.Whilst April creation was significantly down compared to March, the previous month had been unusually high as a result of Tomago's annual creation (217k).
  • Commercial lighting recorded strong creation (245k); the 3rd highest creation month since July 2014.The 6 month rolling average is now 178k which is more than double what it was 12 months ago.
  • The spot price opened April at $27.25, then fluctuated between $26.80 and $27.40 throughout the month, before closing at $27.10.The price has since drifted lower and closed at $27.00 on 11th May.
